Here’s a blog post at Slice of Raspberry Pi in which you can set-up XBMC (in this case the RaspBMC flavour, but I imagine it works with the others) with a web-interface and then control it using your smart phone. Read more here

It certainly works with OpenELEC, (I mean the XBMC android app, not the instructions you linked to).
