Or, as is the case with many schools, they were thinking\u2026<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">\u201dYes! &#8230;but all our monitors are VGA!\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u2026all they needed was an HDMI-to-VGA Adapter!<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/HDMI-to-VGA1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8980 alignnone\" alt=\"HDMI-to-VGA\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/HDMI-to-VGA1.jpg\" width=\"210\" height=\"129\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This week I will look at how I developed a more comprehensive set of Software Challenges (and ordered a couple more Raspberry Pi\u2019s) so I could run Raspberry Pi Workshops in Schools in a Blog entitled\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>\u201dWhat can you do with <i>just<\/i> Seven Segments?\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>In my role as a STEM Ambassador I had been asked by Kennet School in Thatcham to run a couple lessons for their GCSE Electronics pupils. When I worked for\u2026<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Panasonic_Logo1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9242 alignnone\" alt=\"Panasonic_Logo\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Panasonic_Logo1.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"81\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Panasonic_Logo1.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Panasonic_Logo1.jpg?resize=300%2C54&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u2026in Thatcham about 10 years ago I was part of the Panasonic X70 Mobile Phone \u2026<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/x70_11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9237 alignnone\" alt=\"x70_1\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/x70_11.jpg\" width=\"476\" height=\"635\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/x70_11.jpg?w=476&amp;ssl=1 476w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/x70_11.jpg?resize=224%2C300&amp;ssl=1 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2026design team, so I took along a number of old Panasonic X70 mobile phones for them to dismantle to help them understand the electronics inside. I asked if the school were doing anything with Raspberry Pi\u2019s. I was told that Mel Poyda, Head of ICT was thinking about buying some. It just so happened that I used to work with Mel at <b><i>3Net<\/i><\/b>, but hadn\u2019t realised she had gone into teaching! I discussed my ideas with her and we decided to run a pilot after-school Raspberry Pi Workshop for a group of her Year 8 pupils. I ordered 2 more Raspberry Pi\u2019s and decided their first software task would be to make the Seven Segment Display act as a Dice, a\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/PiDice1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9243 alignnone\" alt=\"PiDice\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/PiDice1.jpg\" width=\"144\" height=\"179\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pupils had never written any software before but were keen to learn! I didn\u2019t explain any of the syntax rules of Python, I just said <b><i>\u201clook at the starting software that counts 1,2,3 on the Seven Segment Display <\/i><\/b>(<a href=\"http:\/\/178.62.14.192\/?p=8677\">See Blog Part 3<\/a>)<b><i> and try and work out how by copying and modifying it you can make it count to 4.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u2026<b><i>\u201cNow make it count to 5.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u2026<b><i>\u201cNow make it count to 6!\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>I then gave them this example Python program to generate <b><i>Random Numbers<\/i><\/b>\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/SevenSegmentsRandom1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9245 alignnone\" alt=\"SevenSegmentsRandom\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/SevenSegmentsRandom1.jpg\" width=\"814\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/SevenSegmentsRandom1.jpg?w=814&amp;ssl=1 814w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/SevenSegmentsRandom1.jpg?resize=300%2C154&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2026in which I had highlighted in yellow the lines they would need to add to their program to generate the random numbers needed for a <b><i>PiDice<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">The Workshop went well! Within 2 hours the 9 pupils, working in 3 groups of 3, each had a working <\/span><b style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\"><i>PiDice<\/i><\/b><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">At the next workshop their second software task was to make the Seven Segment Display act as a StopWatch, a\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9239 alignnone\" alt=\"PiStopWatch\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/PiStopWatch1.jpg\" width=\"238\" height=\"248\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This introduced <b><i>Sound Effects<\/i><\/b>\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/MusicalNote1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9238 alignnone\" alt=\"MusicalNote\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/MusicalNote1.jpg\" width=\"113\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(which worked after I resolved a small technical glitch which I will talk about in a later Blog entitled <b><i>\u201cDoh! There\u2019s no sound!\u201d<\/i><\/b>)\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026and <b><i>State <\/i><\/b>Machines\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/StateMachine1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9240 alignnone\" alt=\"StateMachine\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/StateMachine1.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"132\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2026to control the flow of the program.<\/p>\n<p>This task was a bit more demanding and took two Workshops to complete!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">From the <\/span><b style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\"><i>PiDice<\/i><\/b><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\"> they now knew how to write Python for:-<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em;\">GPIO as Inputs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em;\">GPIO as Outputs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em;\">Time Delays<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em;\">Random Numbers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">And from the <\/span><b style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\"><i>PiStopWatch<\/i><\/b><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\"> they now knew how to write Python for:-<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em;\">Sound Effects<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em;\">State Machines<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They now had the software skills needed to write their first computer game\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Figure_Eight_My_Pi_without_Graphics1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9246 alignnone\" alt=\"Figure_Eight_My_Pi_without_Graphics\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Figure_Eight_My_Pi_without_Graphics1.png\" width=\"353\" height=\"60\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Figure_Eight_My_Pi_without_Graphics1.png?w=353&amp;ssl=1 353w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Figure_Eight_My_Pi_without_Graphics1.png?resize=300%2C50&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 353px) 100vw, 353px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next week I will describe how I made a PCB for the Seven Segment Display creating the <b>\u201cSeven Segments of Pi\u201d<\/b> <b><i>\u2013 possibly the simplest games console in the world!<\/i><\/b> And showed the pupils\u2026<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><b>\u201dSoldering is fun!\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in learning more about the Seven Segments of Pi visit my Web Site <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevensegmentsofpi.com\/\">www.SevenSegmentsOfPi.com<\/a> or watch the <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/t7XoYSxm3No\">\u201cSeven Segments of Pi\u201d YouTube Video<\/a>.
