I therefore <b><i>had<\/i><\/b> to be there!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So this week\u2019s Blog will be about my 2 days last week at Manchester Central Conference Centre&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.manchestercentral.co.uk\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8210 alignnone\" alt=\"conference_centre\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/conference_centre1.jpg\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u2026attending the \u201cEducation Innovation\u201d Conference &amp; Exhibition and Manchester Jamboree and Raspberry Pi 2<sup>nd<\/sup> Birthday Party Celebrations which turned out to be 2 of the best \u201cPi Days\u201d I have had! (Anyone waiting with baited breath for me to talk about VGA Adapters will have to wait a week or two!)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Happy 2nd Birthday Raspberry Pi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It was another early morning alarm on Thursday morning. 3.30 a.m!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I wanted to get to Manchester by about 8am and it\u2019s a long drive from Berkshire! As I had my breakfast I received an email from Alan O\u2019Donohoe, who was organising the Jamboree, saying Albert Hickey wouldn\u2019t be able to do his \u201cSlice of Pi\u201d talks and would I like to talk in his place. So I volunteered to do a \u201cSlice of Pi\u201d talk on the \u201cSeven Segments of Pi\u201d at 4 pm that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Since I had been a late addition to the list of attendees I had no idea if there would be space for me to set up my \u201cSeven Segments of Pi\u201d exhibition stand and demo, but I packed it in the car, none the less! I arrived at about 8.30am with everyone frantically setting up their stands ready for the 9.30am start. I found the CPC stand\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cpc.farnell.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8209 alignnone\" alt=\"CPC\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/CPC1.jpg\" width=\"187\" height=\"97\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/CPC1.jpg?w=312&amp;ssl=1 312w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/CPC1.jpg?resize=300%2C154&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 187px) 100vw, 187px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u2026with Kevin Howson waiting for the rest of the CPC people to arrive. I told him about the \u201cSeven Segments of Pi\u201d only for him to tell me that CPC have just added it to their catalogue! I therefore negotiated a corner of their stand for me to set up my stand and demo!!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">At about 4pm on Thursday afternoon I did my \u201cSeven Segments of Pi\u201d presentation, which was hosted by Alan, who manages to keep the audience fully entertained in those hand-over minutes as one speaker is disconnecting their laptop from the projector and the next speaker is plugging their laptop in! I am told all of these \u201cSlice of Pi\u201d talks were videoed, so maybe in a few days it will be available for the world to see!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Over the 2 days I spent some time on my stand but I spent much of my time going round the other stands talking to people from the education world and people from the Raspberry Pi community, many of which I only previously knew as names on a Web Site. In particular it was great to talk to <\/span><b style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Simon Monk<\/b><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.monkmakes.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8208 alignnone\" alt=\"Monk_Makes\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Monk_Makes1.jpg\" width=\"283\" height=\"64\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Monk_Makes1.jpg?w=471&amp;ssl=1 471w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Monk_Makes1.jpg?resize=300%2C68&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u2026who\u2019s Web Site I had found back in May 2012 just after I had received my first Raspberry Pi, and, in response to the pupil who kept asking me <b>\u201cYes\u2026but what does it <i>do<\/i>?\u201d<\/b> I had decided to try hooking the GPIO up to an old Seven Segment Display I found in my electronic junk box. Through his guidance I found you needed to be in \u201cSuper User\u201d mode to access the GPIO. You also needed to import RPi.GPIO to drive the GPIO from Python. I then (eventually) found that the GPIO were referenced by their P1 Connector pin number, <b><i>not<\/i><\/b> the GPIO number on the schematics <b><i>or<\/i><\/b> the Broadcom GPIO number!!!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It was also great to talk to Mike Cook, co-author of \u201cRaspberry Pi Projects\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Raspberry-Pi-Projects-Andrew-Robinson-ebook\/dp\/B00HTKWMUA\/ref=sr_1_1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8207 alignnone\" alt=\"Raspberry_Pi_Projects\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Raspberry_Pi_Projects1.jpg\" width=\"119\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">and \u201cRaspberry Pi for Dummies\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Raspberry-Pi-Dummies-Sean-McManus-ebook\/dp\/B00BV9B8ZA\/ref=sr_1_1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8206 alignnone\" alt=\"dummies\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dummies1.jpg\" width=\"135\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dummies1.jpg?w=225&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/dummies1.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 135px) 100vw, 135px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">\u2026who\u2019s entertaining discussions were in danger of seriously undermining his online persona where he calls himself \u201cGrumpy\u201d Mike Cook! One nugget of information I got from him was about SD Cards, and the fact that not all SD Cards are created equally! I had already found that after taking an image of a complete 4GByte SD Card it was not always possible to fit the .img file onto another 4GByte SD Cards since the original SD Card may have been a full 4GBytes but the other \u201c4GByte\u201d SD Card may only be 3.9GBytes! In particular Mike said he had found the Raspberry Pi runs faster with some SD Cards than with others! His recommendations were, DON\u2019T use \u201cClass 10\u201d SD Cards. DO use \u201cClass 6\u201d SD Cards. And in terms of brand probably Samsung and SanDisk are the best. Can anyone else confirm \u201cGrumpy\u201d Mike Cook\u2019s findings?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">Whilst it was great to talk to these Raspberry Pi enthusiasts, the real value to me of the Jamboree was it taking place in conjunction with the \u201cEducation Innovations\u201d Conference and Exhibition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\">I talked to several quite influential people in the world of education and if anything further comes out of these discussions I will include details in later Blogs. But the clear message I got about the barrier to schools adopting the Raspberry Pi for teaching programming is that many teachers are daunted by the complexity! That is everything from knowing what bits to buy in addition to the Raspberry Pi itself (PSU\u2019s, Mice, Keyboards, Monitors, Adapter Cables), to programming the SD Card, to understanding the vagaries of Linux. And that is before they even start teaching programming! So, <\/span><b style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em; line-height: 1.6875;\"><i>we need to help teach the teachers!<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocr.org.uk\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8205 alignnone\" alt=\"ocr\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/ocr1.jpg\" width=\"198\" height=\"92\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/ocr1.jpg?w=330&amp;ssl=1 330w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/ocr1.jpg?resize=300%2C139&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">\u2026has made a start with their \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocr.org.uk\/qualifications\/by-subject\/computing\/raspberry-pi\/\">Getting Started Tutorial Sheets<\/a>\u201d and the\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.computingatschool.org.uk\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8204 alignnone\" alt=\"CAS\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/CAS1.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"52\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/CAS1.jpg?w=583&amp;ssl=1 583w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/CAS1.jpg?resize=300%2C44&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u2026initiative to get people like myself to register with them so we can help schools is also an excellent start, but there is a great deal more to be done!
