Using solar-powered Raspberry Pis and sensors, they can listen to the sound of the forest and give an indicator of its health and the state of its biodiversity. The data is transmitted over the mobile data network.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/?attachment_id=20535\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-20535\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-20535\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/rob-ewers.jpg?resize=187%2C250&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/rob-ewers.jpg?w=187&amp;ssl=1 187w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/rob-ewers.jpg?resize=160%2C214&amp;ssl=1 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 187px) 100vw, 187px\" \/><\/a>Professor Rob Ewers, from the Department of Life Sciences at Imperial and Principal Investigator for the SAFE Project, said: \u201cThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/news\/190939\/livestream-sounds-rainforest-hear-what-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">health of a forest ecosystem can often be attributed to how much noise it creates<\/a>, signalling how many species are around. As well as listening to whole soundscapes, we hope that in the future the system will be able to pick up individual species and record their presence \u2013 or absence \u2013 from certain areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team has made <a href=\"http:\/\/acoustics.safeproject.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some of the recordings available online<\/a> so that you can listen to the sounds of the rainforest.
