It was so I could create an automated 360-degree turntable lightbox with integrated HQ camera to take consistent, rotatable photos of robots at the next <a href=\"https:\/\/piwars.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pi Wars<\/a> event.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst in my possession, I wanted to take a bunch of photos through it to see the results and inspect them for image quality, light-gathering ability, focus control and a few other features. The easiest way for me to do this was to make a portable camera where I can put it through its paces, hence the idea of <em><strong>PiDSLR<\/strong><\/em> pinged into my head. (I know this is technically a mirrorless camera, but I thought the PiDSLR name was cooler!)<\/p>\n<h2>Objectives<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Design and 3D-print a simple mount for the camera to connect to a Raspberry Pi.<\/li>\n<li>Create a way of viewing a live preview so that I can focus the lens whilst out and about.<\/li>\n<li>Create a way of triggering a photo to be taken.<\/li>\n<li>Put the loaned Raspberry Pi HQ Camera and lens kit through its paces.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Putting it all together<\/h2>\n<p>Using only parts I had lying around the house, I needed to find a way of making this work. I have Raspberry Pis &#8220;up the wazzu\u201d, and I have the new HQ camera so that wasn\u2019t a problem.<\/p>\n<p>Creating the preview screen posed a bit of a dilemma. Having taken a \u201cfew\u201d photos in my past (probably around 10-a-day on average, every day for the last 10 years) I know that when outside, preview screens can easily be washed out, so I wanted to go for an electronic viewfinder (EVF)-style preview. I searched for a while and found I had a few options in my house that fit the bill.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Option one<\/span> was my old Panasonic FZ20 which has a \u00bd-inch Electronic ViewFinder (EVF). A bit of Googling with no results on how to connect anything like this to a Pi and I decided against destroying something that, technically, still works.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Option two<\/span> was an <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.pimoroni.com\/products\/adafruit-1-44-color-tft-lcd-display-with-microsd-card-breakout-st7735r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adafruit 128&#215;128 TFT 1.4 inch screen<\/a> that I used for Pi Eyes last halloween that I could use in conjunction with a single <a href=\"https:\/\/arvr.google.com\/cardboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Cardboard<\/a> lens to create a homemade EVF. Googling this showed it wasn\u2019t going to be simple to set up. There&#8217;s precious little information that will allow me to use the screen with the Raspbian desktop GUI, and I really didn\u2019t want to go down the route of a bespoke image buffer preview screen for something that is only a test. After a bit of playing with the Pi Eyes scripts, I did get the screen working as a desktop for Raspbian, but looking through the Google Cardboard lens magnified everything so I was looking at the individual RGB pixels rather than an overview of the image, so I had to give up on this.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Option three<\/span> was an old <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.pimoroni.com\/products\/adafruit-pitft-plus-320x240-2-8-tft-capacitive-touchscreen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adafruit 320&#215;240 touch screen<\/a> I bought years ago for something I can\u2019t remember. It neatly connects to the Raspberry Pi via the GPIO headers, fits within but fills the Pi footprint, so looks reasonable and has a setup script from the manufacturer that configures it to show the Raspbian desktop&#8230;<strong>SCORE!<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Designing the Mount<\/h3>\n<p>Knowing my way around a 3D printer and CAD system, I knew I wanted to print a mount for the camera. I didn\u2019t want to design something that would take hours to print but I wanted something neat and practical. The idea of a simple base plate that the Pi would mount to on one side and the camera on the other was the obvious choice. At least for a test, anyway. I started by using the camera on a piece of paper as a stencil and drew around it, putting dots in the mount holes. I then placed a Pi over the sketch and similarly drew out its mount points. The position of the camera connector on the Pi and the camera lined up reasonably well so that I could reuse one of the mount points between them and thus save a bolt! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>I then used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onshape.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Onshape<\/a> to draw up the sketch, extrude and fillet (for roundness style). Slicing the design in Cura showed 38 minutes to print, which is well within my &#8220;less than an hour, that\u2019s fine\u201d timeframe.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all too easy to not take into account components on the back of PCBs when designing 3D mounts. And this was no exception. Whilst printing I noticed that I would need a spacer between the Pi and the mount because the bolt heads holding the camera on the other side would be touching the back of the Raspberry Pi, potentially shorting out components. First, I attached the camera to the mount with 3 bolts and spacers leaving the shared bolt hole empty for now. Then, I flipped over the board and mounted the Pi on the reverse, remembering to insert the spacers on the back and also for the fourth shared bolt hole for the camera.<\/p>\n<p>The trickiness came when trying to tighten the M2.5 nuts around the camera as they are very close to the frame and anything other than needle nose pliers just wouldn&#8217;t fit easily. The pliers also aren\u2019t great as they have a tendency to slip off and cause frustration, so remember: if you replicate this project, take your time when doing this!<\/p>\n<p>Before attaching the Adafruit 320&#215;240 screen, I could either solder buttons directly to the GPIO pass-through pads or, if I wanted an extendable trigger button, I could solder short wires to the #27 pad and screw them into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/kwmobile-3-5mm-Balun-Converter-Adapter-Black\/dp\/B07FW2GH7N\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">female 3.5mm screw terminal jack<\/a>. I decided I wanted the trigger button, so I soldered a couple of wires to a momentary push button and screwed them into a male 3.5mm screw terminal jack.<\/p>\n<p>All that was needed then was to slot the screen onto the GPIO pins.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1Pwcy0syxli7ZbCQCxRic_M4aaxxsnkbe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Photographs from the build, at various stages, can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Software<\/h2>\n<p>Firstly, you need to do the obvious step of <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.raspberrypi.org\/en\/projects\/raspberry-pi-setting-up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">installing Raspbian on a micro SD card<\/a>. Open up a terminal and then enter the following commands to bring your Pi up-to-date:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt update\r\n\r\nsudo apt upgrade<\/pre>\n<p>Then, enable the camera module by running:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo raspi-config<\/pre>\n<p>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/documentation\/configuration\/camera.md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">using the Interfaces menu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Then, navigate to your home directory:<\/p>\n<pre>cd ~<\/pre>\n<p>Install the Adafruit 320&#215;240 screen by following <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.adafruit.com\/adafruit-pitft-28-inch-resistive-touchscreen-display-raspberry-pi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">their instructions<\/a>.\u00a0<strong>IMPORTANT:<\/strong> Make sure that you say\u00a0<strong>no\u00a0<\/strong>to having the PiTFT as a text console and choose\u00a0<strong>yes<\/strong> when asked if you want it to be an &#8220;HDMI mirror&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve set-up the screen, you can download the Python module for the Adafruit PiTFT screen created by <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/elParaguayo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">elParaguayo<\/a> that handles button presses and the backlight.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> correct<\/strong> way to get the module would be to clone the repo:<\/p>\n<pre>git clone https:\/\/github.com\/elParaguayo\/PiTFT_Screen.git<\/pre>\n<p>and move the pitftgpio.py file into your home folder (don&#8217;t forget the &#8220;.&#8221; on the end!):<\/p>\n<pre>mv PiTFT_Screen\/pitftgpio.py .<\/pre>\n<p>Or you can do as I did, which is to simply download the Python file that you need:<\/p>\n<pre>wget https:\/\/raw.githubusercontent.com\/elParaguayo\/RPI-Info-Screen\/PiTFT\/pitftgpio.py<\/pre>\n<p>Now we need to create a Python file that tests for button presses and calls the raspistill command.<\/p>\n<pre>nano camera_button.py<\/pre>\n<p>Enter the following into the camera_button.py file:<\/p>\n<pre>from pitftgpio import PiTFT_GPIO\r\nimport datetime\r\nimport subprocess\r\n\r\npitft = PiTFT_GPIO()\r\nlast_pressed = datetime.datetime.now()\r\nwhile True:\r\n    if pitft.Button3:  # pin 27 on this board\r\n        # Get current date\/time of buton press\r\n        now = datetime.datetime.now()\r\n\r\n        # Stop multiple sequential button presses by testing time\r\n        # difference to the last known pressed date\/time.\r\n        if (now - last_pressed).total_seconds() &gt;= 0.5:  # allow if over half a second between presses\r\n            last_pressed = now\r\n            print \"Camera button pressed\"\r\n\r\n            # Format out the date\/time for appending to the filename\r\n            filename1 = now.strftime(\"%Y_%m_%d-%H%M%S\")\r\n\r\n            # Format out the command we want to start and call it using subprocess module\r\n            cmd = \"raspistill -vf -hf -rot 180 -t 10000 -o \/home\/pi\/Pictures\/img_{}.jpeg\".format(filename1)\r\n            subprocess.call(cmd, shell=True)\r\n<\/pre>\n<h3>Running on boot<\/h3>\n<p>There are a few ways to run a command when the Raspberry Pi boots. The best would be to create a <em>systemctl<\/em> script that is told to start at boot. The advantage with this is that it is easy to start\/stop\/restart the script via the command line and it can also be told to start after critical components are ready. The main disadvantage with this method is that I can never remember how to make the boot script or the commands that you use to enable it. (Mike: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/?p=13999\"><em>I covered this for a shutdown script previously<\/em><\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>A second, easier and as far as I\u2019m aware, still reasonable way is to use the @reboot option in crontab. To do this, edit the crontab file:<\/p>\n<pre>crontab -e<\/pre>\n<p>and add the following line to the bottom of the file:<\/p>\n<pre>@reboot export DISPLAY=:0 &amp;&amp; python \/home\/pi\/camera_button.py &amp;<\/pre>\n<p>A third and frowned-upon way (and the way I used because it\u2019s super-simple) is to add the following lines to the \/etc\/rc.local file.<\/p>\n<pre># Tell raspistill to show its preview on the local screen.\r\nexport DISPLAY=:0\r\n# Run the python camera script\r\n\/usr\/bin\/python \/home\/pi\/camera_button.py &amp;<\/pre>\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT<\/strong>: the \u2018&amp;\u2019 symbol at the end of the commands above is <strong>critical<\/strong>. This tells the bash prompt to run the Python script in the background, without waiting for it to finish. Without that symbol, the Pi will get stuck and not boot at all.<\/p>\n<h2>Results<\/h2>\n<p>It takes a few tries to get your head around the manual focusing within the 10-second preview time and I definitely found the 16mm telephoto lens much easier to use in that respect. (<a href=\"https:\/\/magpi.raspberrypi.org\/books\/camera-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A guide and a note on focusing the 6mm lens can be found here<\/a>). The resulting photos are a significant improvement on the standard Raspberry Pi camera but, obviously, I won\u2019t be swapping my proper DSLR camera for this just yet (although the five to ten hour battery life I would get from the Sandstrom 12.8 amp hr USB battery pack is better than my DSLR\u2019s battery life!)<\/p>\n<p><a
