Being a software engineer, however, and not a gardener, gave him a distinct problem: when should the plant be watered? How much moisture is too much? So, he collaborated with <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/JeetShetty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeet Shetty<\/a>\u00a0on an automatic plant watering system called\u00a0<strong>GreenPiThumb<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>He used Python on the back-end for managing soil moisture and temperature sensors and for turning the water pump on and off, as can be seen below.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.250%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;\" src=\"https:\/\/streamable.com\/s\/xjqmj\/mbwepi\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>He also recorded events and sensor readings to a database. The front end (<a href=\"http:\/\/greenpithumb.mtlynch.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">see a static example here<\/a>) was written in AngularJS and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansible.com\/how-ansible-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ansible<\/a>\u00a0was used to deploy the software to the Pi.<\/p>\n<p>It took over a year to complete, despite the two developers wanting it to be a few weeks&#8217; worth, and they encountered many challenges along the way.
