The material is called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geobacter\">Geobacter<\/a>, which is an anaerobic bacteria found in sediment. All the code for the experiment can be <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/interspecifics\/micro-ritmos\" target=\"_blank\">found here<\/a>. The comments are in Spanish, but\u00a0careful use of <a href=\"https:\/\/translate.google.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Google Translate<\/a> can help there.<\/p>\n<p>The hardware is based around a Raspberry Pi B+ and camera module with an Arduino. The music synthesis is done by <a href=\"http:\/\/supercollider.github.io\/\" target=\"_blank\">SuperCollider<\/a>. The bacteria triggers lights to be activated and variations in the cells produce patterns. The Python program &#8216;learns&#8217; as the patterns are watched and that information is sent into the synthesizer. It&#8217;s live coding created by a biological process.<\/p>\n<p>You can see a video of it in action above.
