{"id":10697,"date":"2012-06-25T12:48:00","date_gmt":"2012-06-25T12:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/178.62.14.192\/?p=5"},"modified":"2012-06-25T12:48:00","modified_gmt":"2012-06-25T12:48:00","slug":"raspberry-pi-post-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.recantha.co.uk\/blog\/?p=10697","title":{"rendered":"Raspberry Pi &#8211; Post 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Herewith some quick notes on my slightly frustrating, but ultimately successful RPI experience!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Objective for this session<\/strong><br \/>\nGet the Pi on the network, preferably with WiFi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did I manage it?<\/strong><br \/>\nSort of!<\/p>\n<p>So, SD card loaded with the Debian Wheezy OS.<\/p>\n<p>Started the Pi up, tried out the X desktop by typing startx.<br \/>\nNow to try to get it on the network&#8230; I want to use Wifi.<\/p>\n<p>I plugged my old Belkin wifi dongle in. Didn&#8217;t really expect it to work first time.<br \/>\nIt didn&#8217;t. I needed firmware for Debian &#8211; the boot up screen for Debian told me so.<\/p>\n<p>Nuts. Error message for the dongle. No firmware driver&#8230; so, shutdown the Pi as there&#8217;ll be no way to get it on there short of plugging it in to the router with a wire.<\/p>\n<p>So, I downloaded the relevant firmware from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.debian.org\/zd1211rw\">http:\/\/wiki.debian.org\/zd1211rw<\/a><br \/>\nThen copied it onto the SD card using Windows. I knew this would be a problem&#8230; getting at it on Linux.<\/p>\n<p>I started up the Pi with the SD card back into it.<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230; it&#8217;s on the SD card&#8230; which means it&#8217;s a FAT partition, so I can&#8217;t get onto it directly. So, mount the filesystem&#8230; Found this article:<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.ehow.com\/how_7165724_mount-sd-card-linux.html<\/p>\n<p>Then, in an xterm.<br \/>\nfdisk -l<br \/>\nThis lists all the disks including the SD card.<\/p>\n<p>I forget what it comes up with, let&#8217;s just call it \/dev\/wibble.<\/p>\n<p>Make the folder for the mounted drive:<br \/>\nmkdir \/mnt\/SD<\/p>\n<p>Then mount it:<br \/>\nmount -t vfat \/dev\/wibble \/mnt\/SD<\/p>\n<p>Then go into it with cd \/mnt\/SD.<\/p>\n<p>Then copied the folder with the firmware in it to \/lib\/firmware\/zd1211<\/p>\n<p>What I could have done is use Linux&#8217;s &#8216;aptitude&#8217; to install it:<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/wiki.debian.org\/zd1211rw<br \/>\nI kind of wish I had done, but I wasn&#8217;t willing to fall back to cabled LAN yet!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: white;\">Right, so that&#8217;s the drivers installed. Reboot. Piss about with iwconfig trying to set it up from the command line.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"background-color: white;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.debian.org\/WiFi\/HowToUse#wpa_supplicant\">http:\/\/wiki.debian.org\/WiFi\/HowToUse#wpa_supplicant<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: white;\">Realise that it&#8217;d be easier\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: white;\">with a gui for managing the network. Bugger. Get fed up.
